Coordinating Sentences in Spanish – PDF Worksheet

¡Hola! Thank you for visiting our site. This time, we are sharing a PDF with two exercises to practice coordinated sentences in Spanish, which are a subset of compound sentences in the language. We hope you learn a couple of new things with this material.

Directions:

At the top of this worksheet, we explain that coordinated sentences in Spanish (las oraciones coordinadas) are formed by two or more basic sentences linked by a conjunction such as “y,” “o,” “,pero” (but) and others. They are classified into three types:

  1. Coordinada copulativa: Los chicos comieron pastel y reventaron la piñata. (The conjunction “y” links two basic sentences about the same topic)
  2. Coordinada disyuntiva: Ellos hacen la tarea o ayudan con los quehaceres. (the conjunction “o” links two sentences that represent different choices)
  3. Coordinada adversativa: Ella vino a trabajar, pero olvidó preparar el informe. (The conjunction “,pero” shows contrast between both sentences)

In the first exercise, students must read a list of 12 sentences belonging to the three categories presented in the examples, and then decide whether these clauses are “copulativas”, “disyuntivas”, or “adversativas”. Some of these sentences will use other conjunctions in special spelling cases, for example: “Pedro e Ignacio” replacing “y” for “e” when the second word begins with “i.” To solve the second exercise, they must read the clues and unscramble eight complex sentences. Then, they must rewrite them on the lines below the clues.
