¡Hola! Thanks for joining us. We are sharing this nice PDF worksheet to practice the grammar rules to conjugate stem-changing verbs -E to -IE in Spanish in the present tense. We hope you find this very useful. Let’s start…
Directions:
Students could work individually or in pairs on these exercises. They can also solve it online through the quizzes in this page.
As we explain in this material, some Spanish verbs suffer a stem change from E to IE (the stem being the first part of the verb) when conjugated in the present tense for several pronouns, except for “vos”, “nosotros” and “vosotros”. Here are a couple of examples with the verb PENSAR:
- Yo pienso que es buena idea. (I think it’s a good idea. – Here, the verb pensar has an -e in the stem, so instead of saying “yo penso”, we will say “pienso”)
- Nosotros pensamos en ti. (We think about you. – Here, the verb pensar also has an -e in the stem, but since this change does not apply to the pronoun “nosotros”, it will stay as “pensamos“)
To solve the first exercise, students must complete the chart on the worksheet containing a list of 12 common verbs that may need a -E to -IE stem change in the present tense. Students could make use of a conjugation tool to double-check the right form of these verbs. As for the second exercise, students must fill in the blanks using the correct forms of the E-IE stem-changing verbs in parentheses, making sure to use the right forms for each case.
