3 Steps for your First Conversation in Spanish

Having your first conversation in Spanish could be an easy task if you follow three basic steps. This lesson is mostly related to basic ways to introduce yourself and someone, as well as how to say hello in goodbye. Having said that, we will teach you how to use this vocabulary properly in three steps that will surely help you have put together a basic conversation in Spanish.

Steps for your first conversation in Spanish
Causando una buena primera impresión en tu primera conversación

Step 1: Begin the conversation with a simple Spanish greeting or question

You first conversation in Spanish may begin with a simple greeting like “¡Hola!” (Hello) or “¡Buenos días!”(Good morning!). In order to make it sound even better, you may add the name of the person you are greeting at the end, for example: ¡Hola Sra. Gonzalez! If you want to begin the conversation because you need help, then a nice way would be “Disculpa, ¿puedes ayudarme?” (Excuse me, can you help me?). A more formal version of this question would be “Disculpe, ¿podría ayudarme con algo?“. Other conversation starters in Spanish could be things about the weather in Spanish like, “El clima está agradable hoy ¿verdad?” or use asking about time as an excuse with “¿Qué hora es?”.

Step 2: Introducing yourself in Spanish properly and being polite

In many situations, you might need to introduce yourself in Spanish. In order to do so, you can use the expressions “Mi nombre es” + your name or saying “Me llamo” + your name. Then ask the other person its name with “¿Cuál es tu nombre?”(casual) or “¿Cómo se llama usted?”(formal). It is common to say “¡Mucho gusto!” or “¡Es un placer!” after hearing someone’s name. The next thing is trying to find an interesting topic to talk about with that person, probably something simple like “colores favoritos” as it is just your first conversation in Spanish. Another important question you may ask once you say your name is “¿Cómo estás?” or ¿Cómo está usted? (how are you). Let’s see some of the expressions we have covered so far in a very basic conversation.

Example No. 1

  • Ricardo: ¡Hola!
  • Alan: ¡Hola! ¿Cuál es tu nombre?
  • Ricardo: Mi nombre es Ricardo. ¿Cómo estás?
  • Alan: Muy bien, gracias. Yo soy Alan.
  • Ricardo: ¡Mucho gusto Alan!

Ricardo: My name is Ricardo. How are you?
Alan: Fine, thank you. I’m Alan.
Ricardo: Nice to meet you, Alan!

Step 3: Finish your first conversation in Spanish with a nice farewell.

As we have seen in the previous lessons, there are many ways to say goodbye in the language. You might use a very simple “¡Adiós!” but for your first conversation in Spanish, it would be better to use more polite, cool expression such as “¡Fue un placer hablar con usted! ¡Nos vemos pronto!”, “¡Me alegra haberte visto! ¡Nos vemos!”, “¡Fue bueno verte! Es tiempo de irme. Cuídate mucho”. These expressions are more suitable if you had already met the person you are talking to. Let’s read and listen to another conversation.

Example No. 2

  • Ricardo: ¡Hola Alan! ¿Cómo estás?
  • Alan: Bien, ¿y tú? Tanto tiempo sin verte.
  • Ricardo: Sí, voy para la escuela, ¿y tú?
  • Alan: Yo voy a mi casa.

  • Ricardo: ¡Me alegra haberte visto! ¡Nos vemos pronto!
  • Alan: Está bien. ¡Fue bueno verte! Cuídate!
